Electronic Prescriptions – Your Choice

What is the Electronic Prescription Service?

The Electronic Prescription Service (EPS) has been introduced by the NHS to allow your GP to send your prescription electronically to the home delivery service or pharmacy of your choice.

What are the benefits of EPS?
• You’ll no longer have to visit or call your GP in order to collect your prescription.
• Your prescription will arrive with your chosen home delivery service or pharmacy quicker, giving you a more efficient service.
• Your prescription can’t get lost in the post.
• Less paper waste.

How can I use EPS?
You’ll need to choose somewhere for your GP practice to send your prescription to - this is referred to as a nomination.
You can ask any home delivery service, a pharmacy that offers EPS, or your GP practice to add your nomination for you. You don’t need a computer to do this.

Is my information safe with EPS?
EPS is as reliable, secure and
confidential as your paper prescription. Only authorised members of staff working in your GP practice, pharmacy or home delivery service will be able to view your electronic prescription.

Where is EPS available?
Currently, EPS is only available in England and while not all GPs are fully enabled yet, the NHS plans to eventually make this the default for all prescriptions.
To find out if your GP offers EPS you can contact your surgery directly or search for your surgery on nhs.uk/service-search  . If EPS is available, you’ll see the EPS logo on the provider’s profile page.

Can I change my nomination?
Yes, you can either change or cancel your nomination by speaking to any pharmacist or home delivery service that offers EPS, or your GP practice.
Make sure to inform them before your next prescription is due or your prescription could be sent to the wrong place.
